We are OFFICIALLY ready for Trick or Treating!
Now it is time to showcase Princess Raegan's CowGirl Princess Costume!
My inspiration for this costume is based on Princess Raegan's new found passion for everything HORSE.
Naturally, I combined her passion with my passion for tulle (looked around the internet for additional ideas to draw from) and came up with CowGirl Princess.
First, I de-constructed an entire pair of old hand-me-down capri jeans, (I removed the waistband). I sewed to the pantlegs the pieces of fabric that I had cut from a package of fabric charms. Some call this "patchwork" but the new trendy term is "decoupage". I used a fat quarter for the contrast fabric on the pantleg cuff. I added the suede fringe and strips of tulle for the tutu.
I purchased a Simplicity costume pattern for the top and used a very inexpensive light pink cotton fabric. I decoupaged (going for trendy) the collars to match the pantlegs. The contrast fabric was used for the yoke and sleeve cuffs. The left-over suede fringe trimmed the yoke. I embellished the yoke and sleeve cuffs with large, gem-style scrapbook brads in shades of pink. Three cute little pony buttons adorn the front of the blouse. The pony buttons are for decoration as the blouse has a velcro closure in the back. The leftover contrasting fat quarters were used as a rolled neck babdana.
Finally, I attached the sash by sewing it to the pants over the top 1/4" of tulle. In the pictures I tucked the shirt into the belt section of the sash but I am contemplating sewing the shirt to the sash to prevent the shirt from riding up. We picked up a pink cowgirl hat and ordered the boots from an ebay auction.
I love making these sashes and have incorporated one in every garment I have created.....hmmmmm, could it be The Hobby Mommy signature look?....we'll see...
The CowGirl Princess Costume was a big hit with Princess Raegan AND with the residents of Smithfield as she insisted on wearing it on our afternoon outing. She recieved many compliments, smiles and finger pointing. One vehicle almost came to a stop as the driver pointed to the CowGirl Princess as we strolled through the Historic Smithfield Downtown District. This was our first visit to Main Street and it was a pleasant surprise.
The street is lined with 18th century Colonial and Victorian period houses and buildings. Princess Raegan and her eye for everything PRINCESS was in awe of all the "castles".
We stopped in the Smithfield Gourmet Bakery & Beanery for the most delicious large pumkin with cream cheese filling muffin. mmmmmmyummm....
Then we took a rest in front of the Smithfield Times where Princess Raegan, (and Ariel) and Ben Franklin discussed the finer points of the Declaration of Independance.
With Princess Raegan's 3rd birthday party a couple weeks away we continued on to downtown Smithfield, (and the 21st century) to the Dollar Tree in search of party favors and decorations. It was there that we found the final pièce de résistance for Priness Raegan's Halloween Costume.....a cute little stick horse! Just her size and just MY price!
~PAY IT FORWARD!~
If you'll notice in the photo above Princess Raegan has TWO stick horses. One was the Dollar Tree purchase and another was a gift from a stranger. As we browsed the aisles of a discount store in Smithfield, a kind elderly woman stopped to take notice of Princess Raegan. The Princess was admiring a stick horse with a sound chip installed in it's ear. I was attempting to explain to the Princess that she already owned a stick horse and had no need for a second stick horse in spite of the sound effects feature. Naturally, my argument fell onto deaf, two year old ears. The elderly woman asked if she could purchase the stick horse for the Princess. I stated how appreciative I was and that it was not necessary. She protested and informed me that her "baby" was fifty (yes 50!) years old. She further pleaded with me to allow her to purchase the stick horse. In the end I gave in to the kind eighty (yes 80!) year old woman.
I have been extremely blessed during the last year and this generous act from a kind stranger has inspired me to finally Pay It Forward. Stay tuned........
